If you’ve noticed that discussions about the **IRIS Dena sinking** or the **Russian oil waiver** are disappearing within minutes, it’s not just "bad mods." It’s the law.

As of **February 20, 2026**, the **IT Rules Amendment 2026** officially turned the Indian internet into a "delete-first, ask-questions-later" zone. Here are the facts you need to know:

**1. The 3-Hour Deadline (The Kill Switch)** Under the new rules, social media platforms (Reddit, X, Meta) are now legally required to remove "unlawful content" within **3 hours** of a government notice.

* **Old Rule:** 36 hours (allowed for human review).
* **New Rule:** 180 minutes. If Reddit doesn't comply in that tiny window, they lose their "Safe Harbour" protection and can be sued or criminally charged for what *you* post. They are nuking posts to save their own skin.

**2. The "Sahyog" Portal (The Centralized Dashboard)** The government (via the I4C) now uses a portal called **Sahyog**. It’s a direct digital pipeline between the Ministry of Home Affairs and social media companies.

* **The Catch:** On **Feb 6, 2026**, the Delhi High Court ruled that platforms like **X (Twitter)** cannot claim exemption—they *must* join this portal. This means a police officer in any district can flag a URL, and it hits the platform's "delete" queue instantly.

**3. Real-World Enforcement (The Kashmir Lockdown)** Look at what happened on **March 3, 2026**. Meta (Facebook/Instagram) took down the pages of **Greater Kashmir**, **Rising Kashmir**, and **Kashmir Life** under Section 79(3)(b). Why? Because they were reporting on the protests following the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader. The government used the "public order" clause to wipe out 17 years of journalism in one afternoon.

**4. SGI (Synthetically Generated Information)** The 2026 rules specifically target "SGI." The definition is so broad that any political meme or AI-enhanced image can be labeled "harmful" and deleted under the 3-hour rule without a court order.

**The Result?**

We are living in a "3-hour democracy." If a narrative is inconvenient for the government—like the IRIS Dena being sunk in our backyard—it is wiped before it can go viral.

**Is this "Digital Suraksha" or just high-tech censorship? Discuss.**
