I stopped scheduling and started brain-dumping instead. My mornings are completely different now.

💡 Advice

For a long time I thought my problem was discipline. I'd make a schedule every morning and abandon it by 11am. Reset. Repeat.

What I eventually figured out: I was trying to do two completely different cognitive tasks at the same time — remembering everything on my plate AND deciding when to do each thing. Those don't mix well. You end up half-remembering, half-planning, and doing neither properly.

The fix that actually worked was separating them completely.

Step 1: Brain dump. Everything. Essay draft, calc review, gym, lunch, that email I've been avoiding, all of it. No order. No times. Just evacuate your head onto a page. This takes 3-4 minutes.

Step 2: Now sequence. With everything visible in front of you, structuring your day becomes almost mechanical. You're not trying to remember anything anymore — you're just arranging blocks.

My mornings went from 20+ minutes of anxious planning to about 5 minutes total. The schedule also actually holds because I'm not forgetting things mid-afternoon and scrambling.

I've been using an app called Lola that does the sequencing step automatically from my brain dump, which has made this even more frictionless. But honestly the method works on paper too.

The key insight: your brain is bad at holding a list AND making decisions simultaneously. Stop asking it to do both at once.
