I want to move out
I (f18) was left alone by my parents for six months starting July 2025 until January 2026. At the time I was 17, and when they left I had a summer job and was going to start college shortly. They never had a plan for me, their plan was always to go back to their own country once my stepdad retired. I was left in charge of the house and collecting rent because my stepdad rents the first fooor and basement. I honestly didn’t mind at the time, but before they left I asked if they would help me if I ever needed it and they told me that I had my dad (who is very off and on with child support) and my boyfriend to depend on. They said they were doing enough with leaving me a house, which I found silly because even if I had gone with them they would still have to pay a mortgage and electricity.
I didn’t have many rules, just to not let my boyfriend in the house. My mom said I could but my stepdad said no. I just snuck him in and we honestly had a great time. We would cook together, he would pick me up from work, clean and everything. With time, my stepdad found out and said if I wanted to sleep witj him to go to his house because he didn’t want to be disrespected. I was fine with that because
- My summer job was done
- I was running low on the money I had saved from it
- I was closer to my college
So I took his advice and started living at my boyfriend’s house. I wasn’t getting anything from them other than than a roof to sleep under, and I found it sad that my stepdad expected my boyfriend to buy me all that I needed. Anyway, it is now November, I got a call from my school saying I owed them a part of my tuition. I thought FAFSA had covered it all but they didn’t. The only reason I chose that schooo was because it was the cheapest and my parents told me they didn’t want to help because I had to learn to be independent. I freaked so I asked my mom if she could speak to my stepdad about helping me but she said he couldn’t give me his life savings because he worked hard for that. I tried to get her to call me several times so we could talk about it at least, but she never wanted to talk about it. She told me to pray, to take a semester off, or to ask my boyfriend.
I wasn’t pissed, I knew they didn’t owe me this or anything for that matter, but their lack of care about anything regarding me made me so depressed. A couple of days later, my stepdad got a check from his 401k that was 20x the amount I needed for school. I didn’t say anything because I had already made up my mind- they didn’t care.
By December I had applied to over 40 jobs in my area, by my school, and by my boyfriends house, but it was always rejected because I had no experience or they had moved on with another candidate. My boyfriend said he’d be willing to give me the money but I couldn’t take it because he had many other things to pay for. But around February of this year, I applied to community college for the summer. Anyway, my parents arrived in January. The first couple of days were great. But my stepfather was incredibly rude to my boyfriend. When he saw him again, he just shook his hand. He got mad at me because he had told me to tell him to throw out some concrete, but he never did it because we didn’t live here anymore. I didn’t really care because my boyfriend had done him a lot of favors and my stepdad is in the type to say thank you or please because he thinks it’s something my boyfriend should naturally want to do. By the second week of them being here I was getting frustrated because they came back into my life and started telling me how to live it. They would get mad that I didn’t like to eat breakfast, or that I only wanted to do laundry every two weeks, they would also get mad if I saw my boyfriend. I tried to talk to them, but they started telling me that I had reckless behavior, and they regretted leaving me so much because I became a different person. I told my mom that I was upset that they didn’t care about my education enough and she said to me that I should be ashamed of myself because I was willing to be a whore, but not take the payments of one (???). I asked her to explain to me what the hell that meant and she said that I should’ve just asked my boyfriend to pay for my tuition.
At this point, I really wanted to move out, but the only thing holding me back was the fact that my boyfriend lives with his parents and I don’t wanna intrude. His parents were really kind to me when my parents weren’t here and they were dying to meet my parents when my parents didn’t want to because they didn’t want to pay for food if they went out. FYI, my parents aren’t poor, but they have a poor mentality. My boyfriend assured me over and over again that his parents would love to have me there and then eventually we would move out. I, however, try to make amends with my parents. We were good for a good month. But things started getting bad again. I have been applying to jobs and so far all I’m doing is reselling clothes online. I got an interview for a a job, but I was told I can only work there if I live nearby. This job is by my boyfriend’s house.
My stepdad is the one that is very hostile and rude to me, he always belittles me and gets mad at me for anything that my younger sister does. My younger sister (8) does online school because my parents are gonna be coming in and out of the country and I told them from the start that this was a very bad idea because she’s addicted to her iPad and she’s not getting any physical activity in, but they told me that I was being a bad sister by not believing her. So far, she hasn’t spoken to anyone her age since they came back and she hasn’t gone out of the house in about two weeks, not even to the park. This whole situation really makes me sad because I love my sister and I really want better for her, but they just won’t listen to me. Whenever I sit down there for her online classes I tend to get really strict because she doesn’t listen to me. She tells me that she doesn’t have to. And then my stepdad and her tell me that I’m gonna be a bad teacher (teaching was my intended major).
Overall, I’m really over it and I plan on telling them today that I want to move out.
Is this a good idea? Should I try to work things out?
