💗Weekend Romance Prompt: Secret Identity in Romance - why is this trope so good?
I’ve been thinking about the secret identity trope in romance and how much tension it can create.
Someone isn’t who they seem. Maybe they’re hiding a second life, a past they don’t talk about or a role the other character would never expect.
Those moments where the mask almost slips can be so good, the almost-confession, the fear of being fully seen, the question of what happens when the truth finally comes out.
With International Women’s Day around the corner, I’ve also been thinking about stories where the FMC holds more power, strength or complexity than the world around her expects, and if their is an identity she keeps hidden.
Curious what people think:
• Do you enjoy the secret identity trope in romance?
• What books or stories do it really well?
• What makes the reveal satisfying instead of frustrating?
And if you write, what kind of secret identity would you want to explore?
Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts. 💗
