"One Step At A Time" disco-ish 80s song, female singer + children

I would have heard this song on vinyl several times around 1984-1986 in south Florida, but don't recall ever hearing it on the radio. It was a disco-ish/dance song by a (black?) female singer that repeated "one step at a time" throughout the song. I also have a memory of children singing the "doe, a deer, a female deer..." part of of Do-Re-Mi during the song. No memory of the album cover. Any thoughts?
