Ice-type defensive matchups do not make a lick of sense because of the physical shape of Ice Pokémon
hi there,
just wanted to share some thought I've had. We all know, the Ice-type is one of the most underprivileged in terms of defense. I think I know why we're all so disappointed about it.
Ice as a defensive typing, has this feature of being compared to Steel and Rock for its solidity. As a result, in type matchups, Ice is weak to Fighting, Steel and Rock, because it is a material that can be broken with karate, and it is less solid than the 2 others, so they also can break it.
The problem is, contrary to Steel and Rock that have been host to massive amounts of golem-shaped Pokémon, the Ice-type is much more represented by mammals, birds, and certain aquatic creatures, or on the offchance, a tree and a vanilla cone.
As a result, even if the type matchup should make sense, it doesn't, because if a nomal-type and a water-type bear can both be hit neutral by Rock moves, the same bear should be hit neutral too, were it to receive the Ice-type.
What to do? Two options in my opinion:
-
Redefine Ice-type defensively so it could be understood as a sort of mammal too. It would still be weak to fire as polar bears don't particularly thrive in hot climates, so it makes sense. Fighting, Steel and Rock weaknesses disappear, but then it gains a weakness to Water, because mammals staying in ice-cold water can still have hypothermia and die. They could become weak to Psychic, as it takes focus to survive harsh cold weather, and disturbing it would take the balance off. So it would be weak to Psychic for the same reasons why Fighting type is. Game Freak will never do it but I think it's fair.
-
Produce new creatures that are strictly Ice golems and can make the stereotype easier to understand without an outcry. I feel that's the easiest way out, although the old Pokémon will still be jarringly incompetent in their defenses.
Overall I don't need to add to what we know about the offensive side of Ice type, it is understood as your basic Frost Magic found in any RPG.
Do you think there are other types with deceiving matchups, comparatively to their Pokémon's physical features?
Let's debate :)
TLDR: Ice Pokémon should be Ice golems, and if that's not the way Gamefreak wants it, then the weaknesses it has are unfair because they're no way to understand them easily.
