Nmom wants feedback on her screenplay, but it’s horrifyingly bad and extremely offensive

[Advice Request]

Recently started talking to her again. She genuinely has her heart in the right place, but it’s like she’s gotten brain damage over the years from all of the abuse she’s gotten from my Ndad, abusive stepdad, her schizoid dad and brother, and her own Nmom. Like self awareness can only go so far, and not very, before a switch flips and she either simply cannot comprehend the words anymore. I truly don’t think she can control it.

Anyway. She told me she wrote a script. And stupidly I agreed to read it. Now I feel like I’ve gotten a look inside her brain. It’s really ugly in there. She described all the female characters by how attractive they are. When she introduced her self-insert character for the first time she described her as “chubby, but she loses 15-20lbs by scene 39.” Her self-insert then is called a “fat cow” three times in 44 pages. Another character “zooms in on her fat rolls.” Another character is named after my cousin, same age and profession as my cousin. That cousin character literally says to the self-insert: “That's awful. And I thought my situation was bad. I'm just infertile with a mountain of credit card debt.” This cousin also has a sex scene with her husband where “they make passionate, angry love.” She wants my sister to play my cousin (there is also a long history of weird sexual boundaries between my mom and my sisters and I).

She has the money to self-produce this, and keeps talking about winning an Oscar, and what a great writer she is. My cousin is extremely upset, obviously. I think if she actually read it then none of my cousins would come to my baby shower, and I wouldn’t blame them. I want to call her and apologize on my moms behalf but ik that would make it worse.

I’m really dreading having dinner with her this week, because I’m sure she’ll ask me about it. What do I even say? I feel sad for her, offended for my cousin, outraged for my sister, triggered by the fatphobia, nervous about my baby shower, embarrassed at the idea of this movie getting made, because in addition to all that, it’s genuinely just very bad writing. I think it’s wisest to sidestep the issue entirely (“I don’t feel comfortable with giving critical feedback, it’s all a little too intimate since we just started talking again, but best of luck with your screenplay”). But I also do feel the same old impulse to try to get her to see the reality I see, even though I know how that always goes.

I don’t know if I should placate and avoid hard subjects, or if I should just be honest about I feel, since that’s useful info for deciding how / if to progress in our relationship.

What would you do?
