Melanesia:
Melanesia is a subregion of Oceania located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Its name comes from Greek and means “black islands,” referring to the darker skin of many of its inhabitants. The region generally includes Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and the French territory of New Caledonia. Melanesia is one of the most linguistically diverse regions on Earth. Papua New Guinea alone contains more than 800 languages, making it the most linguistically diverse country in the world. The ancestors of Melanesian peoples are thought to descend partly from some of the earliest modern human migrations out of Africa that spread along the southern edge of Asia tens of thousands of years ago. Over time, these populations mixed with later Austronesian migrants, producing the diverse cultures and languages seen today.

Polynesia:
Polynesia is a large cultural region of the Pacific Ocean usually defined by the Polynesian Triangle formed by Hawaii in the north, New Zealand in the southwest, and Easter Island in the southeast. Unlike Melanesia, Polynesia is relatively culturally cohesive. Polynesian societies share closely related languages belonging to the Austronesian language family as well as similar mythologies, social structures, and traditions. Their ancestors were remarkable seafarers who navigated vast stretches of the Pacific using stars, ocean swells, winds, and bird movements. These migrations began with the Austronesian expansion from Taiwan through island Southeast Asia and eventually reached the central and eastern Pacific about 3000 years ago. Famous Polynesian cultures include the Māori, the Hawaiians, and the Samoans.

Micronesia:
Micronesia is a region of the western Pacific composed of thousands of small islands scattered across a vast ocean area. The name means “small islands,” which reflects the geography of the region. It includes island groups such as the Caroline Islands, Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, and Gilbert Islands. Independent countries in the region include Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Kiribati, along with U.S. territories such as Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Micronesia is the least populous of the three major Pacific cultural regions and historically remained relatively isolated. The people of Micronesia have mixed ancestry with links to both Austronesian migrants from Asia and neighboring Melanesian populations, creating a distinctive cultural and linguistic landscape shaped by seafaring traditions and island life
