what’s your experience writing despair while avoiding being mega cringe / campy
i’m writing a fairly dark story from a diary POV, and the character, who is already unsteady, endures a lot of trauma. death, addiction, near-fatal injuries, Powers Beyond Comprehension, etc. since this is her dairy, she is very raw and vulnerable with her feelings and experiences.
My issue is when she’s writing on and recounting these traumas it’s *such* a hard line between making her venting feel believably traumatized while also being engaging to read. i want there to be enjoyable and eloquent prose, but also want it to sound raw and vulnerable- not like someone is sitting there consciously turning their pain into high poetry or whatever.
the problem is that quickly goes from like “i’m so insanely hurt right now” to like, long winded anime villain monologue lol.
not really even asking for advice, i think i have developed a decent balance, just curious about other’s experience writing first person and/or diary style trauma :)
