Therapist seems annoyed with me
I have been having a difficult time in therapy- I have been in therapy on and off for my whole adult life, and know I need it. I am struggling though, with how to advocate for the help I need… maybe I have an unhealthy expectation of what a therapist can do… my expectation is that they are people who can listen but also help you see your problems in a clinical way- like from another pov than you .. I guess I expect them to challenge me and guide me toward a healthier solution.
I gave our sessions time to get to know each other and we set goals as well. However I do not feel like my therapist has been active in the sessions. I feel like I have to put a lot of effort to fill the sessions bc when I stop speaking there is silence. They are very one sided, so much so that I am masking in the sessions to avoid it being awkward. And that feels terrible.
I also got the sense that maybe I was bothering my therapist… like my talking was annoying or maybe she thought my issues were annoying? She doesn’t seem invested in helping me and I struggle bc if she thought something I said was bad why couldn’t she address it… like I keep hoping that when I talk she will interject with some thoughts about it. She asks me no questions about my upbringing.. doesn’t ask follow up questions… and overall I feel judged. I just left the session feeling really badly for bothering her and then questioning if therapy is right for me.
There are check ins where I can say how therapy is going but I always give a really good rating bc i struggle so much with honest communication that is negative- I haven’t confronted her and I keep giving her good ratings….. I brought up communication last session but that was the session where I felt really judged
