Planning on quitting 6 figure job due to health, how to protect finances and still pursue FIRE?
I (late 20’s F) am planning on quitting my job due to health. I’m currently on intermittent FMLA and have accommodations but it’s not enough. I also tried applying to other jobs in tech, but had no luck, so I may have to quit with nothing else lined up.
I’ve been working in tech between 2-3 years. I’m currently making ~100k a year (gross income).
My partner works part time in retail, so something close to ~20k a year (gross income).
we spend ~4k a month on rent, insurance, food, etc (HCOL area).
I have:
• 100k in a HYSA (discover)
• 28k in a 401k (6% matched VOYA)
• 2k invested in ETFs (through an IBKR brokerage account)
• no debt
Original plan:
My plan originally was to save enough to buy a small house in cash (even if i ended up getting a mortgage and investing it instead i wanted to not have to worry about missing a payment), invest whatever was left over and then I wanted to leave my full-time job to work part-time to cover my expenses and pursue my passions on the side.
Questions:
• Is quitting financially irresponsible given these numbers?
• Would you keep most of the $100k in cash or start investing it if you might not work for a while?
• What should I do before resigning to protect my finances?
• Is achieving FIRE still possible at all?
Additionally:
• Im hesitant to open a roth IRA because i may move out of the mainland US.
• Our families are low income and already struggling to make ends meet so we can’t ask for support.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
