I just finished watching Falling Skies. And I'm sadly disappointed.
After starting to watch the first season of the series on television back in 2011 but not sticking with it, I gave the series another chance and binged all 5 seasons on Netflix in a short time.
While I really enjoyed the first two seasons, I noticed how the series became increasingly confusing with each subsequent season. Longer and longer periods of time were skipped between seasons, the characters became increasingly stupid, new and unnecessary subplots and characters were introduced that weren't really interesting, and unfortunately, the story just went around in circles and stopped progressing.
And then there were always the new "ideas" the Espheni had. Season 4, in particular, was the absolute low point of the series for me. All those different locations just didn't fit the style of the show anymore. While you could perhaps consider the ghettos logical, I found Lexi's storyline completely confusing and out of place. The reform camps Matt was in also made no sense and seemed completely contrived.
In season 5, it was clear that the creators wanted to return to the original concept but had to carry the baggage from season 4. However, season 5 also made it obvious that the ending definitely wasn't the intended storyline for the show; they needed a quick conclusion. And that's exactly how the last two episodes felt. Instead of ending the series with a highlight, this is what we got...
Overall, I'm very disappointed with how the series ended, as it had so many cool ideas and approaches that could have been developed really well. I honestly hoped to get a glimpse into the Falling Skies universe, where we could have learned more about the other worlds and civilizations. Especially since they introduced another species in season 5.
Who knows, maybe a spin-off series or some kind of sequel season could be made, since the show is currently experiencing a bit of a hype (at least here in Germany, it's in the top ten charts, who knows where else). It's worked for other series, after all...
