Cutting most of my credit cards?
Capital One
Hello gang, I’m looking for someone to take a look at my CC portfolio and give me some feedback on my plan.
Here’s a list of my cards. **All cards have a zero balance**
-Capital One Platinum and Quicksilver - 7 years, 5k limits.
-Discover - 12 years, 10k limit
-Wells Fargo - 10 years, 2k (they never budged on upping)
-2 credit union cards from an old CU I used 5-7 years ago, 9k limits
-Best Buy card - 15k, 10 years
-Amex Gold and BCE - 13k, 11 years
-CareCredit - 40k, 3 years
-RoomsToGo - 25k, 8 years
-Apple Card - 15k, 6 years
Most of the cards stem from one reason or another for needing them. The cards with the major bureaus were when I was travel and move heavy and would “churn and burn” the intro offers. These are the Capital Ones, Discover, and two WF. Haven’t put any transactions on these cards in 2-3 years.
The two credit union cards were a no-ding apply when I opened a car loan with my old credit union because they already had my file. They were originally 5% back on everything but that went away. Haven’t put any transactions on these cards in 2-3 years as well.
-Best Buy card is used for the occasional electronic purchase or Christmas gift for the 5% back.
-Apple Card was used for the occasional 3% back on some Apple products over the years.
-CareCredit was only used once or twice for dental work
-RoomsToGo was opened and used when we moved houses for the intro APR.
-Amex Gold was opened for the intro offer but kept it. Same with Blue.
Mainly, we use Amex Gold for everything and anything now. Looking at our CC statements, it’s hard to justify the Gold annual fee because our spending habits have drastically changed as our family expands.
Is there any reason NOT to cut some of those cards? They all sit in a bedside table drawer minus the Amex Gold.
We’d like to keep Rooms To Go because we’re moving to a new home in March 2027. We’d like to keep CareCredit because it’s nifty for any dental work.
Because our family spending is heavy on Amazon now, I’m thinking we just need two cards for our family. We use Navy Federal for banking and they have pre qualified me for 30k CL on the cash rewards plus which is a flat 2% cash back every day purchases with no limits like other cards. The other card is the Chase Amazon Prime Visa because it’s 5% back. My mindset is to keep that card as the only payment method on our Amazon and we use NFCU 2% card every other aspect of life so we can stop the juggling.
What’s everyone’s thoughts? We are also applying for a new mortgage in March 2027 if that means anything here. FICO 8 right around 820 currently.
