How do I get better at offline dating?
Hey folks. M 30 here. This might be a bit of a wall of text, so TL;DR - how to transition to offline dating if women don't seem interested?
I had trouble dating because I always thought I was unattractive to women. Nothing different to most guys here - I was a regular dude, but simply never felt attraction from a woman. My first 'brief' long term relationship came out of a dating app several years ago when I was in college.
While the apps haven't been too kind, lately I've been getting a few matches. This was actually great for my negative self-image, because if women are liking me based on my dating app pictures, I can't look all that terrible. I've gone on dates with 4 women so far but they never develop into anything (I held hands with one girl lmao).
Now that I got over the belief that I'm hideous to all women, I want to try asking a woman out IRL at some point. I've never done this before. It's not that I don't talk to women, but I simply don't feel them returning the energy when I do. I'm not flirting off the bat or anything - I just chat with people in the vicinity in my social life.
If someone seemed interested, I promise you I'd ask them out and take the rejection well if it turned out to be the case. But, when someone gives you closed off body language, short responses that don't lead to more conversation, I don't want to ask them out - if she's not interested in a simple conversation with me, how is she going to be interested in a full date with me? I need to see *some* mutual interest if I'm going to ask someone out. In these cases, I excuse myself politely and mingle with others.
Granted this isn't ALL women, but the women who are friendly to me are usually married and twice my age, or my friends' girlfriends. I'm not going to ask anyone out from either set of this for obvious reasons. I could use some advice on how I can change things around.
Some general data if it helps:
- I'm 5'8, poc, medium-skinny build, work in tech; I groom and dress well and like to present myself well. I don't feel insecure about my height.
- Social skills: I'm not the life of the party but I'm not scrolling my phone quietly in the corner neither; I approach people to talk to but it can take me a minute to feel comfortable, open up and bond with someone. I do have a bit of a stutter that I don't let stop me, and a touch of ADHD but nothing debilitating.
- Where do I meet women that I talk to? Social groups - foodie group, snooker group, friends of friends at hangouts, local FB meetup group, trivia.
- I don't have any female friends (unless we're counting friends' girlfriends but I'm not tight with them). I'm not against it but same reasons as above - I wonder if they think I'm going to hit on them?
- My suspicion: It's probably my personality? But I don't know what's wrong about it. My therapist says I'm "a great dude who doesn't need to change anything" - he's a great therapist but gives me dogshit generic dating advice like "put yourself out there more" and "you're enough".
