Does being fat make testosterone injections less effective?
I’m a fat (BMI 41.8) trans guy about 2 months on T. I do 0.2 mL subQ injection 1x/week. I have noticed 0 changes so far, and while I’m trying to be patient and understand that I’m going through a second puberty and puberty takes *years*, I can’t help but wonder if my weight is inhibiting the T’s efficacy.
Some light research produced the answer that excess adipose tissue increases the conversion of testosterone into estradiol due to aromatase activity, which is obviously not ideal for me. Of course, the studies I read to come to this conclusion were all on obese cis men, so I’m not sure if these findings also apply to trans men.
It’s just really disheartening to think that my weight could be impeding my transition. I’ve been fat my entire life, and have tried many times (and failed) to lose weight for a lot of complex, intertwined reasons, one of them being my PCOS. I’m trying very hard to have a healthy relationship with food and my body, but this is making it exceedingly difficult.
I’d really appreciate hearing from my fellow fat trans guys about your experience with being fat and on T. And from trans guys in general that may be more knowledgeable about T than me, that could maybe give me some insight into how much weight to put on these studies (no pun intended).
