I genuinely need your help/ advice
I did use a bit of AI to help structure this post so it’s readable. Otherwise it would probably be a wall of text. Just being transparent about that. I’m hoping to hear from people who might have been through something similar.
I’m at a point where I feel like I need a full reset in life. I don’t really have a support system anymore, and after years of trying to fix family situations and build some kind of stability, I’ve basically ended up on my own.
Right now my options feel like this:
- Stay where I am in the Western world, pay around $2k a month in rent, and jump back into the cycle of working just to survive.
- Move somewhere cheaper like Thailand for a year and focus on rebuilding — getting in shape, building a routine, and figuring out what the next chapter of my life should look like.
- Keep living the way I’ve been living, just getting through the days and hoping I don't wake up tomorrow. Honestly I don’t want that anymore.
Loneliness has been a big issue in my life for a long time and it’s something I still haven’t really figured out how to deal with. For some background, my dad passed away when I was younger and I had to start working early to help support my family. Because of that, education and building a normal life path never really happened for me. A lot of life has just been survival mode.
I’ve actually been to Pattaya once before. I know it has a reputation, but to be honest I loved it while I was there. It was easy to meet people, the energy felt alive, and there’s a certain freedom there that I haven’t really felt in the Western world. I also won’t pretend female company isn’t part of the appeal. I’m a normal guy and I’d rather have that option than not.
At the same time, I know a place like Pattaya can pull people into a bad lifestyle if they’re not careful. My goal wouldn’t be to get lost in it, but to use the environment to rebuild certain parts of my life. I’ve also been looking at places like Phuket since being near the beach might be better for my mental and physical health.
Financially it also just makes sense. Instead of spending everything on rent where I am, I could live more comfortably and actually focus on improving myself. I would arrive with savings but no job lined up, so eventually I’d have to figure out a new way to generate income.
I’ve looked at other places too like Brazil or Colombia, but safety is a big factor for me and Thailand just seems like a better fit overall, the people there also felt genuinely kind and welcoming when I visited.
I know moving somewhere won’t magically fix my life. But staying where I am doesn’t feel like the answer either. So I’m curious if anyone here has actually done something like this.
• Moved abroad alone to reset their life
• Done it without having a clear income plan at first
• Taken time away from their normal environment to figure things out
Did it actually help long term?
What did you learn the hard way?
What would you do differently if you could go back and do it again?
Appreciate any honest experiences.
