Visited Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. Apparently the dress code is only for women.

Travel

A few days ago I traveled to Madurai and thought I should finally visit the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple. Since it was my first time, I asked the hotel manager what the best time to visit would be so I could avoid the crowd.

He basically laughed and said, “Madam, it will be crowded no matter when you go. Even if you take the ₹100 special darshan.”

Okay, fair enough. It’s one of the most famous temples in India. Crowds are expected.

Then he started explaining the dress code, especially for women. Saree is fine, chudidhar is okay but dupatta is compulsory, and western clothes are allowed only if they cover shoulders and knees. Without a dupatta? Apparently you’re not getting in.

At first I thought, fine. Temples having dress codes isn’t shocking.

But then he casually mentioned that these restrictions are basically only for women. Men apparently have no real restrictions.

And I’m sitting there thinking… isn’t Meenakshi literally the ruler of Madurai? The entire temple is dedicated to a powerful goddess, yet somehow the strict dress code applies mainly to women.

If the rules were the same for everyone, I honestly wouldn’t care. Basic decency in a temple is just common sense.

But the worst part was, The security checking. I’ve been to many temples and even exam centers with strict checks, but this one was on a completely different level. It felt unnecessarily intrusive and honestly pretty inappropriate.

So before I even stepped inside a place that’s supposed to be spiritual and peaceful, I was already feeling uncomfortable and irritated.

Beautiful temple, incredible history, stunning architecture.

But the experience? Felt less like a spiritual visit and more like “welcome to the goddess’s temple, where the rules mostly apply to women.”

Anyone else had a similar experience here?
