Clients keep asking us to do advisory services on top of compliance and I don't know how to price a consulting service
Three different clients in the last two months have basically asked us the same thing: can you help me figure out whether I should hire, can you look at my cash flow projections, can you advise on structuring this acquisition. And I keep saying "yeah let me look into that" while internally panicking bc I have no idea what to charge for any of it or how to scope it or whether my team can even handle it on top of everything else we already do.
I own a small firm, 8 people, and advisory sounds great on paper bc it bills higher and it's not seasonal like compliance which would be a dream. But compliance I can quote in my sleep because I know how long a return takes, how long a monthly close takes, there's a rhythm to it. Advisory is just... thinking? Strategy? How do you put a number on "I helped you not make a terrible decision" when the time it takes varies wildly from one client situation to the next.
And then there's the burnout question bc my senior people are already stretched during busy season and I can't just pile "oh also be a fractional CFO for these three clients" on top of that. The opportunity is real, I can see that, but the execution terrifies me.
Anyone running a small firm who made this shift from pure compliance to advisory? Any tips?
