My Girlfriend gets upset because I sometimes forget something she loves or she tells me before. How do I handle this?
TLDR:
My girlfriend and I were playing a guessing game about what drinks she’d pick. I correctly guessed mango shake, but when she asked what other shake she’d drink, I blanked out and couldn’t remember that she loves Jamba Juice. She got upset because she expected me to know that. Even though we continued talking normally after, she later said she’s still mad. Now I feel guilty because I genuinely try to remember things about her, but I’m very forgetful and have ADHD, so sometimes I can’t recall things in the moment even if I do know them.
Earlier, my girlfriend and I were playing this guessing or intuition game. Basically, there were different drink choices and I had to guess which one she would most likely pick or drink the most. There was one category asking which drink she would drink more, and I chose a fruit shake. I specifically said a mango shake because I thought that was something she would pick, and I was correct.
But then she asked me, “Other than that, what else would I pick?” or like what other kind of fruit shake she would drink. At that moment, I couldn’t answer because nothing was coming to mind. I was trying to remember but I couldn’t think of any other fruit she would choose. In my head, I was thinking of fruit shakes as just one specific fruit flavor.
After trying to think for a bit, she just told me the answer, which was Jamba Juice. When she said it, I was like, “Oh yeah, of course,” because I know she really loves Jamba Juice. But that answer didn’t come to my mind earlier because I thought the question was about a single-fruit shake, not a mix of fruits. Since Jamba Juice is a combination of different fruits, it didn’t occur to me while I was thinking.
After that, I could tell she was kind of upset that I didn’t guess it correctly. She knows that I know she loves Jamba Juice, so I think she expected me to say it. She went quiet for a bit and seemed visibly upset. Eventually, though, we were still able to play games and talk normally again.
But just now, she told me that she’s still mad about what happened earlier. All I said was “I’m sorry,” and now we’re not really talking. We’re on a call, but she’s facing the other direction instead of the laptop. She’s just reading, and when I called her name after coming back to the call, she didn’t respond. So right now it’s just really quiet.
Now I feel sad because I really do try my best to remember the things she tells me. But she also knows that I’m a really forgetful person. Even I know that about myself—my short-term memory isn’t great. Sometimes I want to blame it on my ADHD (i'm officially diagnosed btw), but I also don’t want it to sound like I’m just making excuses for forgetting things.
I just don’t know what to do sometimes because I know she gets disappointed or upset when I don’t remember certain things. But the truth is, I really don’t mean to forget, and sometimes I genuinely just can’t recall things in the moment. Right now I just feel guilty for not remembering it, or for not remembering things she tells me sometimes.
