Was there any attempt by Red Army Officers to fight back during the '39 Army Purges?
So I listen to a lot of Youtube History channels on my commute, and today was listening to one on the failure of the Red Army during the Winter War. One of the reasons listed for said failure, was due to the systematic purge of capable officers by Stalin. A statistic (do not remember exact numbers) that was mentioned was something akin to 80% of Corp Commanders were relieved, executed, or sacked.
Perhaps it was pure crippling paranoia, but it would seem to me if men who controlled 60%+ of the military could see the writing on the wall, they would use those troops in a manner that would safeguard their person. Did it happen all at once like a surgical strike? Were the men more loyal to the state than their own commanders? Was it simply "maybe I will be lucky and survive so better keep my head down?". Or were they unaware it was happening until they themselves got "black-bagged"?
