My brother is addicted to ChatGPT and is using it for his divorce. How do I get him to stop?
(Throwaway account because my brother knows my personal one)
Some important background: earlier this year my brother decided to get a divorce from his wife due to her addiction issues, anger problems, and her cheating on him. They were together for almost 10 years and they have three children together. However, she has had 0 contact with the kids in 2026. She moved out of the house in late December which has caused my brother to live paycheck to paycheck and be a single dad. My brother has always been the person that drops all of his friends when he gets into a relationship. Now that he's been in this relationship for almost 10 years he truly has 0 friends left. He relies on our parents and myself to help watch the kids for 12+ hours a day while he's at work. He works at a job where he's isolated for the whole day. I think the loneliness combined with his messy divorce is what caused him to start talking to ChatGPT. It started out with him just asking simple questions about divorce laws in our state. But now he's talking to ChatGPT every single day.
Two weeks ago, I was at his house and he was telling me a story about something that him and his "friend" were talking about. I asked who the friend was because I was excited to learn that he had a friend for the first time since high school. Instead he told me that it was his AI friend on ChatGPT. Now my brother continuously refers to the AI robot as his "friend" and he'll say things like, "I was just talking to my friend and he said...". It's very sad because I understand why he's doing it but I don't know how to get him to stop. He uses it for parenting advice, for a "shoulder" to cry on, and he even pays money for the plus version which is $20 a month. Despite him living paycheck to paycheck, he is spending money on ChatGPT and it makes me really worried about him.
The worst part about all of this is that he's using ChatGPT as if it's his lawyer. He is constantly asking it legal questions, he'll tell the AI what his ex is doing and he asks for advice about it, and he's only trusting what ChatGPT tells him even if we tell him something different. He saved up enough money to afford a lawyer but now he's decided that he can just use ChatGPT for this divorce instead of having to pay money for a lawyer. There's a way where you don't need a lawyer to file for a divorce but because there are 3 children involved my parents and I want him to have an actual lawyer so he doesn't lose custody. Our parents have even offered to pay for it but he refuses because he "trusts his friend."
I've tried having a conversation with him about it but he tells me that I've never experienced a divorce before so I can't decide how someone else should cope with it. I told him that I would watch the kids for one night so he can go out to a bar or something to make friends. But he doesn't like alcohol and he's uncomfortable around it due to what he's witnessed from his ex. We live in a very small rural town so there aren't any nearby hangout spots for guys in their 30s expect for the bar. Is there any way to make him stop using ChatGPT for his divorce? If you went through a messy divorce, how did you cope with it in a healthy way? I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks.
