Guns in Fantasy: Yay Verily, or Nay..er..Nerily?

Firstly, I’m not talking about modern / urban fantasy. More the 14th - 18th century tech settings that would allow for gunpowder projectile weapons.

It seems like most fantasy writers are opposed to guns, although crossbows seem a lazy go-to replacement if they want a stand-off or a threat the hero can’t counter.

Is gunpowder something that would cause you to avoid a series and, if so, why? Interested to see if there’s any consensus.
