Family of Alcoholics

Friend/Relative has a drinking problem

TLDR; Parents are HEAVY alcoholics, fights are getting worse, they refuse to admit they have issues. I’m a previous alcoholic and can tell they withdrawal when they don’t drink. Need advice IF any on how I can maybe help them before it becomes deadly, I want them there healthy for themselves and for my future family.

Hello,

I’ve posted in here many times before. Mostly when I initially stopped drinking due to withdrawals and needed some support. As I’ve changed my relationship with alcohol and have opened up about the issues of drinking in my family I see better how its effects have ruined people in my family.

My parents are both heavy drinkers, taking the occasional “week break” to make themselves feel better. But I can definitely tell they withdrawal while on these breaks as they can rarely leave a sitting or laying down position because they feel sick…. All of which I know too well and went through before. I’ve talked to them about not drinking and I get the usual responses of “We’re adults” “We can make decisions for ourselves” but, it’s come to a point where they get into verbally violent fights chasing eachother, my father is seeing a doctor for his liver which I know is due to alcohol but he says it’s over red meat…? Anyways, the drinking is getting worse and the altercations have as well, almost pushing me to call police one night.

Long story short I need advice on how to try and help them… I know addicts usually dont quit unless they want to, and I know/can see they don’t have near future plans to, but I genuinely don’t want them in the hospital with liver failure or going into psychosis due to their drinking. I’m at a loss at this point. They both deny having any issues especially with drinking and I just want them around HEALTHY, and for the day I have kids and get married. I want them to want to be healthy and not have to constantly factor in drinking as a daily thing. My father even has coolers while he drives… it’s becoming too much. The constant need for alcohol is getting worse, if I go near a liquor store and don’t come home with a bottle they even get annoyed I didn’t stop to buy one (which I refuse to do for a long time now)

Some extra stuff if you’re not over this post yet, my family is Polish, and Polish people drink ALOT. We are going to visit family this summer and I am getting anxious thinking about having to deal with the constant drinking, HEAVY drinking. I’m trying to get my boyfriend to come with me so I’m not alone atleast. I love them so much I just hate to see them literally drinking the rest of their life away. They know I was an alcoholic so I wish they weren’t so embarassed or hard headed to just talk to me IF they don’t want to reach out to anyone else. My sisters have even urged them to see someone, or get some sort of therapist.

Sorry to talk for so long. I just really don’t know what I can do for them without making it seem like I’m looking down on them as someone who went through it already. I appreciate the fact that they take occasional breaks (usually because they have to see a doctor and probably don’t want high liver fat levels or something… idk…) but taking a week out of the year isn’t helping their case. Drinking random beet juice isn’t “detoxing” your liver when you drink that much. Anyways, any advice helps. Thanks.
