Male Depression on The Pitt
“Someone I loved once gave me
a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift".
- Mary Oliver
In the conversations between Robby, Langdon, Abbott, and Whittaker, there is an undercurrent of existential crisis that is inherent in lives of frontline health care workers.
Each character interacts with this “darkness” in a different way: Robby: coexistence, Abbott: doctoring in war as a military worker, Langdon: substance abuse, Whittaker: helping without boundaries.
What’s interesting to me is that The Pitt is talking about male depression. I’m also thinking of this disease as a stigmatized topic among men. Mary Oliver looks at “the gifts” of darkness. Do you think that perspective is represented in The Pitt?
