Are women actually surprised by marriage proposals, or do most of us just act surprised because that's the tradition?

My partner recently proposed, but I was not surprised at all, but I was still excited. I told him I'd already been tipped off. I decided it was better to not lie or keep a secret. But did that "ruin" the moment for him?
