Good support groups (from someone who runs one)
I've been facilitating caregiver support groups in Atlanta for years. The number one thing I hear from people when they finally show up is "I wish I'd come sooner." So I'm putting this out there for anyone who's lurking and wondering if it's worth it.
Here are some great options in my experience:
Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter runs free groups across metro Atlanta, in person and virtual, broken down by caregiver type.
Emory Brain Health Center does a caregiver program that mixes real education with peer support. Good for people who cope better when they understand what's actually happening medically. There's usually a wait list so call ahead.
Visiting Nurse Health System groups are the most practical ones I've seen. People talk about bathing resistance, hiding car keys, keeping someone safe at home. Less feelings processing, more "here's what worked for me this week."
Wesley Woods is underrated. Smaller groups, geriatric care managers facilitating, and a real focus on planning ahead before a crisis forces your hand.
One thing I tell every family I work with: don't wait until you're falling apart to come. Early stage support groups exist for a reason. You'll build relationships with people who'll still be there when things get harder.
And if you can't leave the house, virtual groups are real and they work. AARP has a solid online community worth checking out.
Happy to answer questions about what might fit your specific situation! Good luck to all family caregivers! You guys are some of the strongest people!
