Comparing Default Policy Limits Whats Enough in UK PMI

Hi all,

I've spent some time digging into the specifics of PMI policy limits and thought it might be helpful to share a summary of what to look out for. It's easy to get fixated on the big headline numbers, but the real value (or lack thereof) is often hidden in the details.

The first thing to understand is that not all limits are created equal. Policies have different types of caps:

  • Overall Annual Limit: This is the big one, often advertised as £1 million or even "unlimited." While reassuring, it's rare for most treatments to approach this. It's the other limits that usually come into play first.

  • Benefit-Specific Limits: This is the most critical area. Your policy will have separate financial or session limits for specific benefits. This is where a "basic" policy really differs from a "comprehensive" one.

The core of any policy is in-patient and day-patient cover (when you're admitted to a hospital bed). For most standard policies, these costs are covered in full up to your overall annual limit. This provides the main peace of mind against major surgical costs.

The real variation between policies comes down to out-patient cover. This includes the consultations, diagnostic tests, and scans you have before being admitted for treatment. This is often where you'll find financial caps, for example £500, £1,000, or £1,500 per year. A lower limit here is a primary way insurers reduce premiums.

It's also worth remembering that standard UK PMI is designed to cover acute conditions that arise after your policy starts. It generally does not cover the routine management of chronic conditions (like diabetes or asthma) or any pre-existing conditions you had before joining.

So, the main takeaway is to look beyond the "unlimited" cover and pay close attention to the out-patient limit. This is often the part of the policy you'll use for diagnostics, and a low limit could leave you with unexpected bills for scans or consultations.

Full disclosure: these insights are from a guide I work on.

For those of you who already have a policy, what level of out-patient cover did you choose, and have you found it to be sufficient for your needs so far?
