Exploding kombucha

I keep seeing people post about huge messes and exploding when they open their kombucha. Why are people just popping them open? I always open my bottles slowly. I get lots of fizz because I use fruit pulp, but you can easily control it. Is it just inexperience opening pressurized bottles?
