A lot of us say “I’m long term,” and then one violent week in energy or AI turns us into day traders with diamond hands made of jello.

With oil ripping, war headlines everywhere, and energy/AI names flying, I tried to step back and ask a simple question in my own portfolio: where did *trading* help, and where did buy‑and‑hold on quality actually win? (This is from my own show, Daily Stock Pick, but here’s the core so you don’t need to listen to get value.)

* Last summer I built a “power list” of energy/infrastructure names. As a basket it’s up \~19% vs \~8% for the S&P over the same stretch, with $AGX up \~80% and $CCJ up \~45%. That came mostly from buying right and holding through noise.
* In contrast, I over‑traded $APP in my Alpha Picks portfolio—selling big size into fear, then watching it rip without me. The original core position (that I didn’t touch) is still up well over 200%; the “smart” trading around it actually hurt performance.
* For new money I’m using $XLE plus individual names like $CRDO and $CIEN as examples of where tools (Sidekick, TrendSpider, quant screens) can help with entries, but I’m trying to keep the *holding period* long enough for the thesis to matter.
