Why inconsistent attention can feel so addictive

Human behavior is strongly influenced by reinforcement patterns.

When rewards are predictable, people eventually stop reacting strongly to them.

But when rewards are inconsistent, sometimes present, sometimes absent attention and anticipation tend to increase.

Psychologists often refer to this as intermittent reinforcement, a pattern studied in behavioral psychology.

It’s the same mechanism that makes things like gambling or notifications so hard to ignore.

Have you ever noticed how unpredictable responses sometimes keep people more mentally engaged than consistent ones?
