I am in the middle of working on an idea for a novel or maybe something shorter. This is my first attempt to doing this. I generated the idea using the Story Engine Deck.
A Killer in Paradise
In the Plaza of the Ancestors in Paradise City, at the memorial of The Breaker, a former vigilante, a flag-runner speaks the truth. There is a killer on the loose in Paradise, and the local mayor is actively involved with a cover-up. Political figures are the target of the killer.
The Flag-runners are what remains of the resistance, Flag-runners carry the flag of Priam, a symbol banned by the regime. They speak for the people, at a great sacrifice. Some of the flag-runners were not affected fully by the mind altering, and can remember some things about the past. One of the members remembers the Breaker. and is actively seeking him out, but has no idea where to start.
The killer, Architectus, is a skilled engineer. He speaks in Latin. The killer is from Priam before the regime change and wants the old regime back in power. The traps that he sets are deadly, and meant to kill the target in a way that fits the crime they committed.
The Breaker (a batman like figure, no super powers) is still alive, his mind has been wiped and the city has had all its minds altered to think that he is dead. He is not a day-laborer that goes by the name Brian. He has a noticeable scar on his face, something that was not there before the mind wipe. He was once the leader of the resistance. He uses an experimental javelin however it has gone missing. His memories are gone but his instinct is still there, there will be scenes where he has advanced reflexes, he may get in a fight and find that he fights with skill he doesn't know where they came from.
The Breaker's javelin is currently being held by the government in a secure vault under the city. It crackles with power. Created through an experimental combination of Silver and Crystal. It has lightning powers and when thrown it will return to the Breaker.
Paradise City was once named Priam. A massive political coup happened , martial law, full control over the people. The Breaker was the symbolic leader of the resistance. He supposedly fell during the regime change. Priam became Paradise through violence and death. Paradise is not a free city, it is controlled by the corrupt government, they rule by fear. There is no crime in Paradise City.
Under the city sits the Mnemonic Array. Crystal resonance towers broadcasting memory suppression signals. The javelin was originally a prototype power source for this system. The Javelin has the potential to overload the machine.
Major Plot Points (not in any order)
- Brian sees the Monument of the Breaker. At first he sees it as just another monument. But something about it disturbs him. It is like looking in a mirror, minus the scar. But it isn't him, perhaps he looked a bit like the Breaker in his younger days but not now. Kind of fun to think about
- Brian, who gets blackouts, gets in a bar fight and is able to take on multiple combatants at the same time.
- Architectus’ murders are like a grand spectacle, very public, but no innocents are harmed.
- Architectus Kills everyone in the facility where the Javelin is being held, and steals the Javelin.
- Architectus and Brian meet, more likely Architectus was following Brian after stealing the javelin, he gives Brian the Javelin and Brian passes out after touching it, all his memories flood back.
- After the memory flood, he returns to the monument, now he realizes something chilling: The statue is exactly him. The city built a monument to a dead man who was still alive.
- The Grand Truth is revealed: Old Priam was corrupt, Paradise is a lie, neither can be sustained. The Breaker destroys the array. The city remembers everything. Paradise collapses into riots. Freedom returns—but violently. History floods back like a broken dam.
- The Breaker found out old Priam was corrupt before the coup. Sacrificed his memory, to a machine he built, trying to give the city a second chance. But a forced reality will eventually fall.
