Suffering builds character, and traumatizing Yuji seems to be Gege's favourite pastime. But Yuji's biggest internal scar, Shibuya, is more than just trauma: it rewired him to exist as the aftermath of a crime.

After Shibuya Yuji has been carrying guilt as a role that the world keeps assigning him (vessel, danger, scapegoat) and by the time he meets Higuruma, he is exhausted enough to play along.

So Gege places their fight in a theater, of all places.

A courtroom is already a stage where every role is assigned in advance: defendant, lawyer, judge, executioner. The lines may change but the structure never does. The cruel thing is that Yuji no longer knows how to be anything except the accused.

And Gege tells us exactly what kind of justice Higuruma's Domain represents before Shibuya is even mentioned. The first charge against Yuji is "underage pachinko parlor entrance."

Not the catastrophe that has been eating him alive.

Pachinko...

A petty offense. A small, technical violation that the system can process quickly because it is simple, clean, and easy to charge. That detail is brilliant because it contains Higuruma's whole tragedy in miniature.

He was someone who once believed the law existed to protect the human being buried underneath the accusation. But the more he saw, the more he learned that systems prefer what is legible over what is true (as explained in [this other analysis](https://www.reddit.com/r/JuJutsuKaisen/comments/1rgci1e/the_cog_of_guilt_vs_the_wheel_of_justice_yuji_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)). So the pachinko charge is not random at all, it is the perfect opening act.

Then, the retrial arrives and Yuji is finally standing before the question that has been following him since Shibuya: what does responsibility look like when the slaughter happened through your body, but not by your will?

"Yeah I killed them. I am not lying and I won't deny it."

Unlike with the pachinko charge, Yuji does not try to argue here, he just confesses. Legally and morally the Shibuya massacre is complicated because Sukuna acted through Yuji's body. But Yuji skips over all complexity and, by accepting responsibility, he goes straight to self-condemnation. He treats nuance itself as something he no longer deserves and honesty becomes self-erasure.

That is the apex of the fight and is where Higuruma breaks: Yuji restores his faith in humanity, but he also destroys his ability to keep seeing himself as righteous.

Inside the Domain, Higuruma is no longer a defense lawyer. He is prosecutor, judge, and executioner compressed into one man. A real justice system keeps those roles separated precisely because no single person should hold all of them... The bitter irony is that he was once offered to become a judge and he turned it down, because he wanted to stand \*beside\* the accused not above them.

Higuruma realizes he has become the exact kind of unchecked power his old profession was built to resist. And Yuji, standing in front of him, exposes that instantly.

One thing I love about Yuji's character is that he has a way of becoming a measure of the adults around him. Nanami sees a child carrying more than any child should. Gojo sees a future worth protecting. Higuruma sees something neither of them would ever have wanted for Yuji: a decent boy already prepared to sentence himself.

The kind of person the brilliant, young defense attorney he once was would have defended, not condemned.

What horrifies Higuruma is not only the confession itself, but the ease with which Yuji says it. He doesn't search for the words, he doesn't hesitate. He says the line like someone who has been rehearsing it for a theater play.

Because in every way that matters, he has.

Since the death sentence. Since the moment the world decided that what mattered most about Yuji Itadori was not who he was, but how useful he could be once reduced to a replaceable piece.

Not guilty.

Higuruma acquits him.

But absolution from the outside doesn't reach that far in, if you have already sentenced yourself.
