Is it appropriate to ask to move from sales into an open HR coordinator role at my small company?

I work at a small company (~40 employees and growing) as a Business Development Representative and have been in this role for about 4 years. Before that I had about 2 years of work experience after graduating in 2020 with a Political Science degree.

Our company has always only had two HR employees: a Director of HR and an HR Coordinator (formerly HR and Admin Assistant). The HR Coordinator is leaving for another company, so that role will presumably be opening soon.

I’m interested in HR and would be curious about the possibility of transitioning into that coordinator role internally. I’ve worked closely with our CEO in the past (for about 3 years before I moved under a different manager) and we have a good relationship.

My hesitation is that I don’t have a formal HR background or education in HR, just my general work experience at the company.

Would it be appropriate to raise my interest in the role internally, or would it come across as strange/unrealistic given my background in sales?
