The second-degree murder charge against 56-year-old Robert Reed has been dropped in the fatal June 2025 stabbing of a 32-year-old man at a bus stop on Richmond Highway.

**Why was it dropped?** The Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office moved to abandon the charge (*nolle prosequi*) due to significant evidentiary hurdles:

* **No Forensic Link:** Although Reed was caught with a knife five days later, testing found **no blood or DNA matches** on the weapon or other evidence.
* **Blurry Footage:** Surveillance video captured the attack but only showed the suspect's clothing, not his face or any distinguishing features.
* **Missing Witnesses:** Prosecutors stated that witnesses are no longer cooperating and cannot be located to testify.

**What happens next?** Reed isn't free yet. He is currently **representing himself** in court for several other serious charges:

* **Drug Distribution:** He faces charges for the illegal distribution of **cocaine and fentanyl** (Hearing on March 19).
* **Inmate Assault:** He is also charged with the **unlawful wounding of an inmate** (Preliminary hearing on April 8).

**The Bigger Picture:** This case is drawing heavy criticism toward Commonwealth’s Attorney **Steve Descano**, as it is reportedly the **third murder case** in his office to "fall apart" recently. This development follows recent reports that police had previously warned the office about releasing another suspect, Abdul Jalloh, who was later charged in a different fatal bus stop stabbing.

Because the charge was dropped via *nolle prosequi*, the state can still re-charge Reed if new evidence is discovered in the future.
