Newbie Question on Support

I mean relatively newest might player i've been playing for a couple of months and I have a question regarding the supports. You see , I come from traditional skybox , mobiles like Dota/2, Heroes of Newerth, Leagues, And while melee supports do exist to a certain extent , they are almost nonexistent if you seriously want a support in the lane. And these kind of games support was mostly always ranged , so they had the ability to harass and box out the enemy while you're carrying farms the lane. While I understand last hitting a forming may not be as important in a game like smite two , since you don't lose gold on death and it generates faster than those kind of games, I noticed that the support category is filled with a lot of tank, melee brawle types in very few ranged. With such limited range , options, How the hell are you supposed to, for example lane an ares with an artemis or any other melee support /w carry, that doesn't make sense or synergies well??
