Cervical Radiculopathy: Has Anyone Tried Surgery for Treatment?
I’ve been dealing with what my doctor believes to be cervical radiculopathy for almost a year now.
It’s massively impacted my quality of life, and I got kicked out of PT bc PT started worsening my symptoms. I tried nerve pain meds, but had a life threatening reaction to the medication, so nerve pain meds are pretty much a non-option for me atp. The only thing I haven’t tried yet are steroidal injections, which I’m scheduled to get in a couple of weeks. I’m hopeful about the injections, however I’m also wary of getting repeated injections over time since they’re epidural injections.
I’m getting an MRI of my neck today to confirm nerve compression. If they do find nerve compression, I’m thinking that surgery might be my best option since previous treatment options weren’t successful, and since I want to avoid getting repeated epidurals.
That said, I do a lot of yoga, and would love to become a yoga therapist one day, so maintaining neck mobility is important to me (ruling out cervical fusion as a treatment option). I’ve read, however, that there are three other surgical options for cervical radiculopathy: artificial disc replacement (ADR), posterior cervical foraminotomy/laminoforaminotomy, and laminoplasty.
Has anyone had either of these surgeries performed? If so, would you recommend it?
TIA!
