1. Edmond Dantes/The Count Of Monte Cristo from Alexandre Dumas's "The Count Of Monte Cristo": A classic example of this. The entire story is about how Edmond, after being wrongfully cheated and imprisoned for quite a while which ruined his life completely, with everything he held dear (including the woman he loved) taken away from him, now carefully plots out an elaborate scheme of revenge to get back at all those who brought him to ruin, using his strategic thinking, his wits, his craftiness and determination, as well as the immense financial treasure he has found. He eventually does get back at all those who wronged him, but the fact that a couple of unknowing innocent people who also got caught in the crossfire of his revenge plan suffered from it, filled him with guilt and made him question towards the end if his revenge was really worth it, if innocent people unrelated to his schemes also suffered.

2. Tobey Maguire Peter Parker/Spider-Man in MCU Spider-Man: No Way Home- To comfort a grieving MCU Peter Parker mourning the death of his Aunt May and promising vengeance against Green Goblin who did it, Tobey Maguire Spider-Man confesses that he hunted down the man who he thought killed his Uncle Ben and indirectly led to his death. That didn't fill the grief and guilt he had of allowing the robber who shot Ben to get away in the first place and kill him.

3. The Creature in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein": Throughout the story he is driven by rage and a feeling of revenge to kill off all those close to his creator, Dr Victor Frankenstein. such as his friends, family and fiancée, to get back at Victor for refusing to create a female companion for him. He does Eventually manage to destroy Victor's happiness by killing those near to him, however after Victor passes away during his quest to hunt down the Creature, it confesses that now he doesn't really feel overjoyed that his plan of revenge is complete, and if anything, Victor's death only haunts him more, and now with his creator gone he believes he has no purpose left in this world and shall burn himself to death on a funeral pyre near the North Pole.
