When can strawberries be separated?

Last summer I grabbed discount strawberry plants and tossed them in some pots and they thrived all summer. Come winter I popped them out of the pots and put them in the overgrown garden ground for protection.

Now I have tilled my garden back into submission and I’d like to put the strawberries in the ground permanently but of course they are in a pot shaped masses of plant, root and dirt.

They’re still in winter dormancy and not putting out new growth yet, is now a good time to gently water bath and separate them?
