Programmer's Thoughts, Is Learning Data Structures Still Worth It in the Era of AI Coding?

Career/Edu

I’m pretty new to web development, and this is something I’ve been genuinely wondering about lately. With AI coding tools getting so powerful, it sometimes feels like the way people build software is changing really fast. Tools like Lovable, Bolt, Emergent, Zolly and others can generate large parts of an app just from prompts, and some of them even help fix issues automatically. For example, I was trying out Zolly recently and it has this feature where it can inspect broken code and suggest a fix with basically one click, which is honestly pretty impressive. Because of things like this, I’m curious how important learning data structures still is for someone starting out today. On one hand it seems like fundamentals would still matter for understanding performance and architecture, but on the other hand AI tools seem to handle a lot of the heavy lifting. For those of you who have more experience building real applications, do you think beginners should still spend a lot of time studying data structures, or is it becoming less critical with AI-assisted development becoming more common? I’d really like to hear how more experienced developers are thinking about this.
