I checked 20 brands in ChatGPT to see if AI recommends them. Most had no idea they were invisible. Here's what I found.
Over the past few weeks I've been auditing brands to see how they show up (or don't) in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity when buyers ask category-level questions.
The results were kind of alarming.
Out of 20 brands I checked — all with solid Google rankings — 14 of them were completely absent from AI recommendations on their most important buyer prompts.
The reasons weren't random either. I kept seeing the same patterns:
1. Weak entity signals — AI models didn't associate the brand with its own category. Google knew who they were. ChatGPT didn't.
2. Competitor content dominance — A competitor had published structured, citable content that AI kept pulling from. The brand had better rankings but lost the AI slot.
3. Semantic misalignment — The brand used internal language. Buyers (and AI) used different language. Nobody connected the dots.
4. No structured data for AI consumption — The site was perfectly optimized for Google crawlers, completely ignored by AI retrievability logic.
The wild part? Most of these brands were ranking #1–3 on Google for the same queries. High SEO rank does NOT mean AI recommends you.
If you want to check how your brand (or a client's brand) shows up in AI — I built a tool that diagnoses exactly this and gives you a fix plan. Happy to run a free audit in the comments if you drop your domain.
