Google Team Match Best Strategy
I recently had my first team match call at Google SWE and it went really well. I actually like the team and the manager, but since this is such a big career move, I’m feeling the urge to see what else is out there.
Ideally, I’d like to talk to 3-4 teams to compare culture/tech stacks before committing. However, I’m worried about the "bird in the hand" risk.
My questions for those who have been through this recently:
- Is it common/acceptable to ask the recruiter for more matches even if you liked the first one?
- How high is the risk of the first team moving on if I don't give them a "yes" within a few days?
- In the current 2026 hiring climate, is "Team Match Purgatory" still a big risk? I’ve heard horror stories of people passing HC but never finding a team because they were too picky.
Should I just "take it and run" or try to see more options? Any advice is appreciated!
