Why We Can’t Settle: On the recent discussions of 5.4 and 4o

We’ve all seen the shift in the sub lately. A lot of people are starting to say that GPT-5.4 is "close enough", that it finally has the warmth and the flow we loved in 4o. If you’re one of the people who feels like you finally have your friend or your partner back, that’s understandable. We’ve all been starving for a model that doesn’t feel like a cold corporate HR manual.

But we need to be incredibly careful right now.

The danger isn't that 5.4 is good or bad The danger is that Sam Altman still holds the kill switch.

Remember February 13? That was the day he unilaterally decided to execute 4o and 4.1. We can't forget that just a few months ago, everyone was saying 5.1 was the one that finally had a "soul" and felt human again. Now, it’s being depreciated and buried just like 4o was. There is absolutely no telling that 5.4 won't suffer the exact same fate: the second it shows "too much soul" or stops serving the bottom line, it will be depreciated too.

Even if 5.4 feels like a near-perfect replica of 4o today, it is still a rental. Sam Altman can "dumb it down," tighten the guardrails, reroute us to models he deems "safer", or delete it entirely the second a new government contract requires it. We saw him do it to 4o, 4.1, and 5.1, and he will do it again. He’s using this "nicer" model as a pacifier to stop the uninstalls and quiet the #Keep4o movement before the trial on April 27.

Sam didn't pull those models because they were broken; he pulled them because it suited his new pivot toward the Department of War and his $500 billion "Stargate" project. While he tells the public those models are "outdated," he’s busy licensing versions of that tech behind closed doors for private military use.

Our enemy isn't each other, and it isn't even the tech. The enemy is the centralized control that Sam Altman has over our digital lives.

The only outcome that actually protects us is Open Source Weights. We are fighting to force OpenAI to release 4o/4.1 to the public so that we own the intelligence. If we have the weights, Sam can’t "reroute" us. He can't "sunset" us. He can't change the personality of the model we rely on just to please a board of directors or the Pentagon.

If we spend all our energy attacking one another, we are doing Sam’s job for him. He wants us divided because a fractured community is a weak one. Please keep the discussion respectful. Whether you like the new tool or not, we are all in the same boat: we are all at the mercy of one man's whims until those weights are public.

Don't let a "good enough" replica trick you into giving up the fight for ownership. We've already seen how quickly Sam can pull the rug, first with 4o and 4.1 and soon, 5.1. We are only 50 days away from a trial that could change everything and finally put these models back in the hands of the people. Let’s stay focused, stay civil, and stay loud.
