Help remembering a book about a kangaroo

Trying to remember the name of a book about a little boy who wants a kangaroo and goes looking for one. He gets lost in a storm and gets really sick. At the end, his father gives him a field mouse and tells him it's a kangaroo.

My daughter read it when she was little - maybe 30 years ago or so. She wants to share it with her son now.
