Hyperesthesia?
Has anybody ever had this term brought up at a pediatrician appointment?
I was just at my son’s 4 month appointment. It was nearing time for him to eat but he was still kind of just happily hanging out during the appointment. I put him down for probably the 3rd time onto the crinkly paper-covered exam table and he did something he’s done with me tons of times - arched his back so much that I could see the wall behind him and tensed up. This time he cried, but usually he doesn’t unless he’s already been fussy. I didn’t make any comments about it because, again, he’s done this plenty of times.
My pediatrician seemed really concerned. She asked if he does it often and said she has never seen a baby arch to that level before. We ended the appointment and she walked out, but as I was leaving the office she actually pulled me back in and said after sitting with it for a few minutes she found it really necessary to refer us to a neurologist.
I just feel like the referral is overkill. My baby always gets irritated if he’s picked up and put back down multiple times in a short span of time, he was getting hungry, I had to wake him to go to the appointment, he was only in a diaper and the table/her hands were cold, he’s growing SO beautifully, is reaching milestones, and is honestly the happiest and chillest baby I’ve personally ever met. He does the arching thing when we change him but like I mentioned above, he usually just does it without crying or acting upset. Sometimes it seems like a stretch to me, other times maybe gas, other times like he’s trying to look at something around him. There are NO other inclinations that somethings wrong.
I’m obviously leaning towards taking him to the appointment to rule anything out, but it just stinks because we already have to see cardiology for him and insurance barely covers these appointments. So my question is, has anyone ever had a similar experience? Does anyone think the referral seems appropriate, or also like overkill? I’m a FTM so I’m worried maybe the fact that this didn’t concern me is just due to lack of experience, or if it didn’t concern me because he’s perfectly fine and my ‘intuition’ is telling me that.
