Reducing SaaS overhead: A self-hosted PDF engine to replace expensive API subscriptions

Build In Public

Hello everyone,

One of the most common hidden costs for SaaS companies as they scale is PDF generation. Paying per-document to commercial APIs can easily cost a growing startup $300–$500 per month, or roughly $4,000 per year.

To solve this, I built GoPdfSuit. It is an MIT-licensed, self-hostable PDF service designed to give you professional-grade generation without the "SaaS tax" or vendor lock-in.

Why Self-Host?

Most commercial PDF libraries are either expensive or difficult to manage at scale. By self-hosting GoPdfSuit, you gain:

  • Zero Variable Costs: No per-document fees.
  • Data Privacy: Keep sensitive user data within your own infrastructure (crucial for HIPAA/GDPR compliance).
  • High Throughput: Built in Go, it handles 300-500 requests per second (the underlying engine supports up to 1,700 ops/sec).

Core Capabilities

  • Template-Based Workflow: Define layouts using JSON templates with support for automatic page breaks and multi-page documents.
  • Low-Code Builder: Includes a React-based drag-and-drop builder for designing templates visually.
  • Advanced Features: PDF merging, form filling, digital signatures, and redaction.
  • Mathematical Rendering: Support for Typst syntax for high-quality math equations.
  • Developer Friendly: Native Python bindings and a Go client library are included.

Comparison and Performance

While many tools rely on heavy headless browser instances for HTML-to-PDF conversion (which are resource-intensive), GoPdfSuit is optimized for performance. It supports HTML conversion when needed, but its core JSON-to-PDF engine is significantly faster and more predictable for high-volume billing or reporting.

Resources

If your SaaS is currently spending a significant portion of its infrastructure budget on PDF APIs, I’d love to hear about your use case and see if GoPdfSuit can help you bring those costs down to zero.

I am open to any feedback on the implementation or feature requests that would make it easier for you to switch from a paid provider.
