Surprised by my mother-in-law’s lack of problem solving skills
My mother-in-law is visiting us from India for two months. She’s very kind and cooks elaborate meals for us every day, so I really appreciate her effort.
However, I’ve been surprised by how hesitant she is with basic things in our home. It took her almost two weeks to get comfortable using the stove, microwave, locking the door, or turning off a lamp. She refuses to go for a walk alone because she’s worried about getting locked out. She also won’t experiment with cooking, she only uses ingredients she brought from India and only makes dishes my father-in-law eats (even though he isn’t here).
Most of her day is spent scrolling social media, worrying about relatives back home, or talking on the phone. she gossips a lot too lol.
She grew up in an urban middle-class family and went to a convent school until grade 12, so I assumed she’d be more comfortable figuring things out in a new environment.
It made me wonder can spending most of your life as a homemaker in a very routine environment affect confidence or problem-solving ability? Or is this more about personality, anxiety, or being in a completely unfamiliar place?
Curious if others have noticed something similar with visiting parents or in-laws.
