Should I tell my mom this comment was hurtful even though it was over a year ago?
For some background, I’m an introverted, pretty shy person and I’ve always been uncomfortable being the center of attention. My mom is not like that at all and likes to go all out for everything. I was pregnant and had my baby in April of 2025 (so almost a year ago). This was the first grandchild on my side of the family. During my whole pregnancy, my mom was constantly trying to make everything a huge deal (constantly asking to see my stomach, touch my stomach, wanted me to do a gender reveal party, huge baby shower, etc). All of this stuff made me super uncomfortable because like I said, I’ve always been a more private, shy person and pregnancy is a very vulnerable time. When I told my mom this stuff makes me uncomfortable she told me (more than once) “after that baby is born, no one will care about you, they’ll only care about the baby”. I think she meant this as a way to take the attention off me but it was SUPER hurtful. So much so that now here I am with an almost one year old and I don’t want anyone around my baby because I just assume that everyone is just using me to get to my baby and doesn’t give a shit about me. My mom is elated about her grandchild obviously and constantly fawns over her but I can’t help but hold that comment in the back of my mind and part of me thinks she truly doesn’t care about me anymore, just her grandchild. And I’ve started to just assume that everyone else in my life feels that way too. It’s really affected my perception of her and has made me really keep her and everyone else at an arms length.
Should I bring this up with her even though it was so long ago? She’s been known to be the type of person that gets upset/stonewalls if I voice my feelings and pulls the “well I guess I’m just the worst person in the world!!!!!” card. Is this just what motherhood is? Do I just accept that people don’t give a shit about anymore or should I address this with her? Mom
