Trying to think of extra reptile races a DM could use for a more "critter player character" type game.

DMing

What I mean by Critters is basically the game world is populated by what amounts to animals that have been "Awakened" and had time to develop a society post typical fantasy races vanishing.

Wanting my players to have some variety I have settle on 3 "factions" split along vague species lines. Mammals, Birds, and Reptiles at about 5 races each. The mammals and birds were easy to fill out mostly by ether reworking already existing "beast folk" races and using the bird races from the Humblewood setting shrunk down but its the cold blooded third I am stumbling a bit with.

Currently have 3 locked in already using Grung and Kobold for frogs and lizards respectivly (each faction has 2 small races for some variety) as well as Tortles but the last 2 slots are all in the air.

  • I could see doing Dragonborn but heavily re-flavoring them as like "elemental salamanders" which depending on how I want the world state could be ether separate from Kobolds or have them be like "chosen bloodlines" of kobolds that have become their own things
  • Yuan-Ti are there but with how I am having it be more animal based it feels it would need a lot of retooling to try and balance a race that might have only one "Arm" aka their tails, that or try and make some nature-punk reason they all create like wood and root prosthetic arms.
  • Locatha is scaley but that pushes it more into a "Reptile+" faction, that and their whole you need water is still a restriction to be handled, plus might rob me of saying "fish were not awakened so are a food source" angle of world building

So ether its taking 2 of those three currently but figured might be worth asking the larger internet of people that might know more niche sourcebooks for a 5e focused game for any other scaley stand ins
