Chapter 1

The new intern, Bernadette Mosley, was halfway through her

presentation when blood started running down her legs. I rushed her to the hospital.

The doctor checked her out and frowned. “You didn’t know you were pregnant? It’s threatening to miscarry. If you want this baby, you should stay in the hospital. It’s your decision.”

Bernadette was a senior in college. She had clearly never been through anything like this before. Terror drained the color from her face, and tears welled in her eyes. She clutched my hand and asked, “Angelina,

what do I do?”

I calmed her down and had my assistant, Dorothy Kent, hustle to get her admitted.

Still spooked, Bernadette’s usually rosy face stayed pale, her big eyes all dull and lifeless. She lay there limp, asking me over and over, “I’m gonna be okay, right?”

I was a senior executive in the company, but I liked hanging with the rookies, so they didn’t really fear me.

In particular, Bernadette reminded me of young me. When she first joined, people said that if she covered the lower half of her face, she’d look just like me back then.

So I always got her back. I reached out and tucked a strand behind her

ear.

“Don’t worry. The doctor said you’ll be okay.”

She pursed her lips. “Have you ever been pregnant? What’s it like?”

The words were out before she could stop them. She quickly explained, “Sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I—”

I dropped my eyes. “Yeah, but I lost it.”

She froze. “How come?”

“I didn’t know I was pregnant. I drank heavily and ended up with a perforated stomach. The baby didn’t make it.”

My fingers twitched.

That was a long time ago.

But when it popped back into my head, my body still felt that dull, lingering ache.

Bernadette’s face crumpled. She gently rubbed her belly.

“So where’s your boyfriend?” I said. “Get him here. You need someone with you now.”

She dropped her head and whispered, “He’s crazy busy. He can’t be here to take care of me.”

I frowned. “This is a big deal. It’s his baby too. What’s more important than this?

“If he can’t even show up for this, that’s pretty lame.”

She looked up, all flustered. “It’s not like that. He’s good to me.

“But…he can’t be here.”

I casually asked, “Your classmate? Coworker? Don’t tell me you had an office romance.”

She pursed her lips and didn’t say a word.

“Alright, I won’t push it. Take care of yourself, okay?”

She smiled. She was just in her early twenties, all bright and fresh, like a clean sheet of paper.

She looked up at me, and there was something strange in her gaze. “Thanks, Angelina. If you hadn’t been here today, I’d have been totally lost.”

I felt a bit uneasy for some reason, but I figured I was overthinking it. I nodded, told Dorothy to stay and get a nurse for her, and then got up and left.

I had only taken a few steps when I ran into Cameron, who was striding down the hallway.

I froze. “What are you doing here?”

He hadn’t expected me either. An emotion flickered across his face for a split second, then he got his cool back.

“The new intern is hospitalized. As the boss, I gotta check on her.”

He tried hard to hide how worried he was, but the sweat beading on his forehead gave him away.

“How’s she?”

Something felt off in my gut, but it slipped away before I could figure it out.

“Fine now. It was a threatened miscarriage, but she got here in time. They gave her a shot, and she’ll be okay.”

Cameron let out a sigh of relief. “Good to know.”

He paused. “You head back. I’ll go check on her.”

I didn’t think anything of it and turned to leave, but he grabbed my hand.

I looked back.

In the hallway with the light behind him, his face was in the shadows. I couldn’t see it.

His voice came, low and tangled.

“Love you, babe.”
