Luxury cars are worth the money
There’s a common internet cliché that luxury vehicles are wastes of money, but to me that’s materially false. The refinement and collective brainpower that goes into something like a Lexus versus a Toyota is quite meaningful. It’s not just branding either. Luxury cars have measurably better noise isolation, more sophisticated suspension tuning, and smoother powertrains. Anyone can feel it when they hit a pothole, try to pass someone, or just sit at idle. I understand not valuing those differences personally, but calling a luxury car a waste of money feels like an overcorrection.
The wake up came for me a few years ago when going to trade in a midrange SUV that had been mistakenly sold to me, paid in cash no less, despite apparently having a lien on it. Because of the mess, I had to drive hundreds of miles back home. To appease the original dealer, I test drove a used high end SUV. With some confidence, he handed me the keys and sent me off alone. The drive was beautiful. The car felt incredibly smooth and cradling, like a spa on wheels after that impromptu road trip in the lower end vehicle. I ended up getting it (at a steep discount for my troubles), and the long drive back in the SUV felt like a treat rather than a chore. That experience alone convinced me that luxury can sometimes be worth the hype..
